El zapador era el soldado que preparaba el avance del resto de la tropa. La labor de zapa se extendió al mercado laboral e incluso a la actividad seductora, donde el trabajo previo es fundamental para cualquier conquista. Sin embargo no fue por eso por lo que se eligió el verbo zapear para describir la acción de cambiar de canales de televisión de manera compulsiva, sino por su parentesco con el inglés zapping, actividad que en Norteamérica se remontaba al año 1956 y la invención del mando a distancia. El éxito de tal acción frente al televisor, esa especie de autoridad magnífica, terminó por contagiar nuestra forma de vivir y el zapeo es ya una seña de identidad en las relaciones, las ambiciones, las diversiones y las emociones del siglo XXI.
Pese a que el zapeo define el consumo de la televisión moderna, aún hoy la pantalla sigue ejerciendo un poder adictivo brutal y, pese a la facilidad de acción, apagar el televisor implica un esfuerzo de voluntad enorme. El zapeo propone una falsa alternativa al sabio gesto de apagar, incita a navegar durante horas en busca de algo quimérico que te aguarda escondido en algún canal. La televisión del futuro, que ya está cerca de incorporar la ingente cantidad de material subido a la Red, permite aumentar la búsqueda e incluso empezar a conformar un carácter de programador en el mero usuario.
Enfrentado a especiales televisivos sobre Camilo Sexto, Rocío Dúrcal o Raphael, no es raro que el espectador navideño tenga la sensación de estar atrapado en el mismo bucle musical desde su infancia. Para huir de ello nada mejor que recorrer fragmentos de un músico inasequible, Frank Zappa, que estas fiestas habría cumplido 70 años. Desde su primera aparición en el show de Steve Allen haciendo música con dos bicicletas, hasta las últimas entrevistas ya herido de muerte por el cáncer de próstata que acabaría con él a los 52 años, este experimental iconoclasta, antiautoritario, alérgico a la censura y aficionado a satirizar sobre toda raza y condición, proporciona una gran definición de sí mismo: dale una nariz larga, un pelo extraño y una cara fea a cualquier tipo y verás de lo que es capaz.
Prefiero esa labor de Zappa.
